From the Chartway FCU website: In 1959, seven civilian workers at the Norfolk Naval Air Station invested $5 each and chartered a federal credit union. More than 50 years later, their inspiration has helped us become one of the largest credit unions in the country. Chartway is a not-for-profit, member-owned financial institution – a cooperative association where every person is an owner and profits are returned to its members.

Chartway's corporate offices are on Newtown Road in Virginia Beach, however there are Chartway banking branches at various locations around Hampton Roads.
